Digital artist Craig Walsh was resident in Derby for three weeks in the lead-up to MarshART 2014. During this time, he talked to elder Lena Buckle about what 'belonging' means to her in Derby, and about the people who make up the community of Derby.
The final work – titled BELONGING Derby – was screened as a large-scale projection over three nights as part of the MarshArt festivities in October. The film was projected onto a large boab tree, echoing Lena's reflections on the importance of the boab to the local Indigenous community.
The film also features portraits of community members that were taken as part of the My Face, Our Place project, facilitated last year by Mowanjum Art and Culture Centre.
