We need help from the Paraburdoo community in building this unique large-scale sculpture for the town!
To help with building the sculpture, which is being facilitated by artist Alex Mickle, you can get involved in the following ways:
If you are a Rio Tinto employee at the mine site, contact Glen Johnson or Glen.Johnson@riotinto.com or 0438 972 389:
If you are a Rio Tinto employee or a resident of the town with skills in welding, boiler making, automotive bodywork, aluminium fabrication, stone mastonry, concreting, grano work, or general mechanics, you are invited to join in activities at the Paraburdoo Men's Shed.
Work at the Men's Shed is commencing 4 September. At the moment, Alex is there every day working with teams of people to get cracking on this large work to be completed in a few months!
There are two key things that we need help with. The first is with carving and polishing a large piece of hematite (4.2 metres long) that will form part of the scupture. Alex will give demonstrations and work alongside those interested in learning how to do this!
The second big task is creating steel inner support structures for the large spherical shape of the sculpture. Anyone with fabrication skills is invited and needed to help with this.
If you simply want to watch the sculpture being built, or come along to see a family member or friend contributing to the sculpture, then visit the Paraburdoo Men's Shed during workshop hours. Dates and times will be announced on this site, and on our Facebook page.
